# Musingly Yours by Vaishali Bhat

> This is a series of my reflections, an articulation of my “manogat”. “Manogat” is a Sanskrit word literally meaning “that which has gone into or through the mind”; I have not found a more precise description of a thought. That’s what I intend this series to be – an expression of things that have crossed my mind – some raw, some formed; some short, some long; some studied, some reflex; some simple, some complex; some instinctive, some intentional; some personal, some more general. It’s my attempt to pin and pen down some of the frenetic action in my mind, my manogat

- [D&I d - Is D&I about Gender/Nationality/Race/Culture...?](https://www.musinglyyours.com/5c-whats-di-about/): Diversity & Inclusion (D&I for short) is a hot topic of our times. It is not just a corporate topic any more, but one that is relevant in schools, universities, communities and any group at large. In spite of this, it is not widely understood, and in fact, is widely misunderstood. My D&I journey from
- [Wah, Ustad! (Farewell to the Eternal Maestro of Rhythm)](https://www.musinglyyours.com/wah-ustad-farewell-to-the-eternal-maestro-of-rhythm/): Ustad Zakir Hussain was a magician – for decades, he captivated us with his magic of creating "sur" from "taal". Music wasn’t just a part of his being; it defined him, it was his essence, flowing through every fibre of his musical soul.
- [A Chat With the Incas](https://www.musinglyyours.com/9-a-chat-with-the-incas/): It was a beautiful night. A clear, dark, full sky, dotted with innumerable little stars twinkling away to make their presence felt. The moon shone bright, its full outline clearly and sharply visible around the concave crescent, as if emphasizing to us that it had a full circular shape, just that today it was choosing
- [A Whiff of Immortality](https://www.musinglyyours.com/a-whiff-of-immortality/): ...Just like the rising sun spreads its golden yellow glow over the world as it emerges into the sky, so did this newly-dawned realisation bathe me in a warm glow of joy and love, with the awareness that ...
- [The forbidden fruit](https://www.musinglyyours.com/the-forbidden-fruit/): It looks like a hot day; a lot of water is splashing around and the view is not clear. As the splashing subsides a bit, a bunch of kids of varying ages are briefly visible, playing in water, and hold on, this is not a swimming pool, it looks like a lake or a river. Just as I am beginning to recognize the scene, it dissolves, and a new one appears, this one with a bunch of playing cards that kids are playing with.
- [A bow to rainbows](https://www.musinglyyours.com/a-bow-to-rainbows/): ...my thoughts went back to a couple of times during my travels, when I was fortunate to see two of the most gorgeous rainbow sights one could ever imagine - two very different places, two very different settings, both beautiful in their own different ways, both adorned in crowning glory from one edge of the horizon to another, by not one but two parallel rainbows, that is a double rainbow! As I mused down memory lane, I thought I could take a few of you along too, and help you see these beautiful spectacles in your mind’s eye…
- [To Mothers and Motherhood](https://www.musinglyyours.com/to-mothers-and-motherhood/): Tomorrow is Mothers’ Day. As I sipped my tea this morning, the thought of Mothers’ Day triggered a question in my head – what is motherhood? And this set off an avalanche of memories, ideas and thoughts, exploring the meaning of motherhood and how it has impacted my life. The outcome of this morning reflection is this ode (in prose) … to mothers and motherhood …
- [परसतिश – A tribute to the golden voice of Lata Mangeshkar](https://www.musinglyyours.com/a-tribute-to-the-golden-voice-of-lata-mangeshkar/): "This is not just any musing that I have written about, it is a labour of my love for Lataji's voice, an avid account of my admiration and adulation for her work and her career. I have not seen God, but I have felt His or Her Divine presence in Lataji's voice. To me, that golden voice is the best manifestation I know of माँ सरस्वती (Maa Saraswati), the goddess of the arts and learning. This is therefore an offering of my love, my worship, my पूजा, my इबादत, my परसतिश – to the golden voice of Lataji!"
- [A moment in the moment](https://www.musinglyyours.com/a-moment-in-the-moment/): A bright, sunny, hot morning – I was sitting on one of the beach lounging chairs, feet put up, staring into the endless, azure expanse of the ocean stretched in front of me just across a small stretch of sand. I had been sitting here for a good part of an hour, just looking far out into the water. Sitting at a beach in this manner for hours is not a new experience for me; yet, it was different today.
- [As the little bird flies](https://www.musinglyyours.com/as-the-little-bird-flies/): It’s the end of summer, and as the school year starts post the summer break, we find many of our friends going through the phase of dropping their kids to university for the first time. Emotions that are a part and parcel of this important moment in parents’ lives have been the topic of many
- [Manogat - An introduction](https://www.musinglyyours.com/manogat-an-introduction/): Thoughts, ideas, reflection – that’s what sets us apart from the rest of the living world, and has led to the evolution of our race to levels unparalleled in any other. An average person is said to have seventy thousand thoughts a day. We think fast, we think hard, and most times, we think in
- [D&I b - I AM inclusive; why the fuss?](https://www.musinglyyours.com/di-i-am-inclusive-why-the-fuss/): “Diversity & inclusion” (D&I), a hot topic of our times, is often one that most people don’t fully understand or don’t know how to deal with. They often wonder whether it is relevant to them. As an avid student and passionate believer of D&I, I am attempting to demystify this concept in a series of
- [The "Line"](https://www.musinglyyours.com/3-the-line/): It was heart-rending to see Steve Smith’s press conference video yesterday. A success story, a role-model, a hero reduced to zero. It was difficult to associate this diffident-looking, devastated and broken man with the swashbuckling batsman we loved. One could not help feeling very sorry. Such a sad self-inflicted turn of events for one of
- [Addiction to Coolness](https://www.musinglyyours.com/4-addiction-to-coolness/): Chaos and frenzy …. so many here at the same time, crammed into this tight space. Moving criss-cross, fast, very fast, as if getting somewhere but not sure where; bumping into each other and most times moving on without even looking up to see who they bumped into; sometimes a rare nod of recognition
- [D&I a - "Diversity & Inclusion" - Why Should I Bother?](https://www.musinglyyours.com/5-diversity-inclusion-why-should-i-bother/): “Diversity & inclusion” is a hot topic of our times. Yet it is one which most of us are not sure how to deal with. Reactions sound like these - “It’s not relevant to me, so why should I bother?”, or “OF course I know what diversity is, but I don’t see the big deal,
- [Life & Death](https://www.musinglyyours.com/6-life-death/): Death - the state of being dead … when it comes, it stuns the life out of everyone around. The blow of death hits the dead person silent, reducing him from an animate, warm, bubbling, noisy living somebody to a still, cold, rigid, silent “body”. But it’s not just the dead person that this
- [By The Skin of My Teeth](https://www.musinglyyours.com/6-by-the-skin-of-my-teeth/): If the human race were to be divided into two groups – the pluckier and more spirited ones on one side and the meeker and more timid ones on the other, then I daresay I would fall into the first group. There are a few situations however, in which I get hopelessly and haplessly out
- [Lazy afternoons](https://www.musinglyyours.com/8-lazy-afternoons/): The English language has no dearth of beautiful adjectives that describe everything one would possibly ever want to describe. There are some adjectives however, that must go with certain nouns. It is as if they were made as pairs – blue sky, crispy fries, cosy couch, hot cuppa. These pairs have been coined as
- [Tasmania - Wonder, Down Under](https://www.musinglyyours.com/11-tasmania-wonder-down-under/): ` “Tasmania??? I wonder…”, said I. We were exploring possible destinations for a winter vacation and Tasmania had just popped up as a serious option, checking off all criteria - not too cold at that time of the year, not visited so far, and one with a lot of natural beauty. I was surprised at
- [Newton's Laws Relearned](https://www.musinglyyours.com/newtons-laws-relearned/): I loved physics at school; and Newton’s laws of motion was among my favourite concepts, as it helped explain so many things I saw in the real world around me. Little did I know then that these same laws that govern the world of physics also apply to the world of mental physics, something
- [D&I c - The AURA of D&I](https://www.musinglyyours.com/5d-the-aura-of-di/): Diversity adds hues and shades to our world, making it interesting and fascinating. Diversity is not just about outward differences like nationality, ethnicity or gender; it runs deep beneath the surface in differences not always visible or obvious. Inclusiveness is the only way to leverage and harness diversity. My D&I journey from being a
